Why I need to be re-convinced to develop for the iPhone App Store

Posted by Kraln on Sunday, May 10th, 2009

First, let me give you some background on me and what I do: I am a software developer, and on the side I do some contracting for iPhone apps. I’ve contributed to many apps that are on the store, and published two games under my own name, Triphids and The Internets.

I was working on a Point-Of-Sale system, in Java, for a friend of mine. I had just finished working out the credit card processing section, when I realized two things: “Hey, that was easy” and also “Hey, this would be cool for iPhone”. I looked, and on the store at this time there were a few apps that did this, but they didn’t look good nor did they seem to be making that much money.

I established a relationship with a merchant, and wrote up iTakeCredit for MerchantPlus in about a week, and submitted it to the App Store. On April 14th. A week later I get an email saying that I did not provide them with a demo account to access … fine, I only gave them a username and password, not test credit card accounts. I resubmit the same binary (as I was told) with the updated information.

Then the waiting begins.

Today, I received a letter from Apple, which for sake of brevity (full text in this post) essentially says that they will not accept applications such as iTakeCredit because they require an external account to be functional (vis a vis, a merchant account). You may notice that Today is not anywhere near April 14th. I’ve been waiting almost a month to be essentially castrated.

This wouldn’t be so painful, if not for the multitude of times I have defended the App Store and it’s pricing models. Also, here’s a list of applications now on sale (many which have appeared since I first submitted iTakeCredit, by the way) which offer equal or analogous functionality: iSwipe Credit Card Terminal ($30), Accept Credit Cards (free, tied to merchantwarehouse.com), Virtual Swipe (free, tied to iDeposit.net), Charge It ($15), InnerFence’s Credit Card Terminal (They made a TV ad for this!), Paypal’s own app, and several more not worth mentioning. When I started, there were seven. Now there are over forty.

Convince me, Apple, convince me to keep developing for this platform when you are continually pushing me away. How am I supposed to explain to MerchantPlus what you just did? How can I justify putting any more work towards any iPhone app when your review process is so thoroughly broken? When your apps are pirated freely? Oh, yes, Triphids was pirated massively, but that’s a subject for another post.

its apple… they did t because A) theyre getting kickbacks or B)wanted to do it themselves. i think youd be better off stabbing them in the back and get it to work on competitor networks/phones.

paypal is horrendous in terms of privacy/protection/political policy. the problem is there arent really any other useful pay services. i mean there’s gear pay but thats run by 40 people and no one knows about it.

good luck with it. business is a cut throat arena.

  2. djh816 Says:

When Apple rejects you, go the homebrew route. Post on Cydia store :)

  3. Kraln Says:

It’s not just that apple rejected me, it’s that they also torpedo’d my business relationship with merchantplus — I can’t exactly put out the app on Cydia.

  4. dude Says:

    Life sucks, get over it.

  5. Henry Says:

Apple has a lot of goodwill which they don’t seem to deserve… For instance, why do you have an Apple logo on your blog header?

  6. Greg Smith Says:

“they will not accept applications such as iTakeCredit because they require an external account to be functional”

I dont understand that. There are other apps that require external accounts, like iStockManager needs an Ameritrade account to be functional.

  7. BIll Moore Says:

It’s an Apple attitude thing. I know. I worked in Cupertino for 10 years.

We were arrogant and we knew we were right and everyone else was wrong. Customer ‘input’? Ha… trash it. We have more IQ per square foot than any other company on the planet (this was pre-Google).

I doubt it’s changed and with Steve firmly in charge, I’m sure it’s worse (I was there in the non-Steve years).

Don’t bother trying to change them. It’s cultural at a DNA level with Apple. How they act is how they act, period. They don’t think they’re right in how they operate, they KNOW they are right (even if they aren’t).

Move on. Develop for the new TV platforms coming or Linux. Don’t bother with Apple.

  8. J Says:

Isnt that CLEARLY laid out in the agreement you signed when you got the dev kit?

  9. Kraln Says:

That’s me sitting down with my black macbook. FWIW, They flew me out for a job interview on iPhone related stuff. They put me in a nice hotel.

  10. no Says:

You only had to wait a month? Wow you got off easy.

  11. Kraln Says:

Nope. Nothing is ‘clear’ about their review process. It’s murky so they can have more leeway with what they do.

  12. Kyle Kirby Says:

Yeah, Apple’s review process is all mucked up. I had developed an application, to only have Apple email me and say it would take extra long to review it. Basically what that means is it’ll be months before it gets submitted to the app store, if at all. There are applications already on the AppStore much like mine, so I don’t understand the delay.

  13. Jordan Says:

Call or write to Apple corporate headquarters. Just the other day I got a personal apology from one of Best Buy’s reps along with a $100 gift certificate (which I forced them to donate to the ASPCA) for the rude behavior of one of their employees at my local store. Corporate HQ is much more likely to listen to you (especially if you remind them how large MerchantPlus is) than the app store approval drones.

Or, as someone above said, release your app on Cydia and develop one for Andriod.

  14. Kraln Says:

I actually cc’d my response (not posted) to the sjobs email… We’ll see if it makes a difference.

  15. JT Says:

Anyone developing for Apple after watching how dirty they operate, deserves shame and scorn, and financial ruin.

Forget the iPhone. Switch to Android. It’s a superb development platform, and far more open. Wait for the summer to pass and a bunch more devices running Android to come out and you’ll have a pretty large audience.

  18. Kraln Says:

I started developing for mobiles on Android, for the android competition (code.google.com/p/androidchat — it’s in my blogroll at the bottom). I found the UI difficult to work with and at the time there was no great distribution method. I may indeed revisit that, or I am looking forward to the Palm Pre SDK.

  19. Kraln Says:

Now I’ve seen it, I hadn’t before. But I do think shame, scorn, and ruin are a bit harsh.

  21. Tom Says:

Resubmit it. Submitting to the App Store is exactly like playing russian roulette.

  22. Abraham Estrada Says:

Email, Twitter and a bunch more apps require an external account.

  23. C Says:

Sorry to say, but this is inevitable with a closed model like the one Apple/iPhone has chosen to enforce. There are so many things that can go wrong here – network outages, DRM trouble, hardware trouble – factors that do not have their place in the concept “buy/sell an app, install it”. Totalitarian behaviour from “content enabler” like the App Store should be seen as a huge red flag saying “don’t get on this train wreck”. Before the current generation of developers got into high school, Infocom died (partly) because of the greedy corporate belief that 100% of Intellectual Property can be controlled and protected… History repeats itself as soon as enough people forget the past.

  24. Apple Says:

This was my plan along along muhahaha

  25. Andy Says:

    @Abraham
That is exactly what I was thinking. How does Apple get away with claims like that when its obviously not true? Almost as dumb as saying “We don’t accept apps that’s name can’t be found in a dictionary” Sad.

    Good luck Kraln.

Could have done this app for Windows Mobile or Symbian or RIM with much less hassle. Apple’s a clear minority in smartphone marketshare globally and an even smaller player in the corporate/business world. Why anyone devs for them beyond fart apps and pseudo-ringtone $1 apps is a mystery. The new Samsung app store even out-itunes itunes for shiny goofiness.

  28. dave Says:

First stop whining you are better than that. Second as has been already sugggested resubmit. If that don’t work climb the corporate ladder.

Whatever you do though first cut out the whinny attitude. If everytthing in life was easy and worked as you suspect that it should then innovation would screetch to a halt.

    Dave

  29. Stevie Says:

Don’t bother with Apple, they’re paranoid control freaks. They don’t want to allow anything that has any potential to abstract away their underlying platform, which is why they have such draconian policies.

I don’t have a problem with upfront requirements for stability and compatibility reasons, but I would *never* develop for any platform that requires that my application be approved to ensure it doesn’t potentially conflict with their business model. People doing this are just begging to be screwed over as you have been.

  30. hal Says:

Can you make your comment section’s font smaller? It’s still barely readable. –Kraln: I love you too–

  31. Ches Says:

I’ve been a relatively happy Apple user for many years now. I have my qualms about proprietary aspects, but I put many of them aside. iPhone development is a case where I wouldn’t.

To counter some of the troll-ish types who’ve commented here, there is plenty that’s compelling about the capabilities of the phone and developing with the frameworks, especially if you’re already familiar with Cocoa. So I can sympathize with you in being wooed.

But the App Store approval model and the “iPhone Developer Program” just made me turn up my nose from the outset. You mean I paid the premium for a Mac to develop on, paid for an iPhone, you give me an SDK, and then you want me to pay another $100 chump charge to hook up and fully use all the things I now own? To help you make more money on your closed platform? And then you might not let me distribute my app anyway because of a convoluted, arbitrary approval process?

Can’t imagine why it’s not sitting well with so many people :-) Sorry to hear that you lost time and soured a relationship before you felt the burn.

  32. Wordy Says:

I’m pretty sure bitching about it on a blog that no one important reads is the solution. –Kraln: Never said it was, thanks –

  33. Pennywise Says:

Rumor has it that Steve Jobs reads customer email on a regular basis. You might try going straight to the top with this. (Google his email address–it’s no secret.)

I don’t know if this will get you a resolution any faster than re-submitting, though.

All you guys talkin’ about “get over it” and “stop whining” are a bunch of tools. These are legitimate issues. Anyway, it’s not like the guy went and sat down in your cubicle to bend your ear, he was just relating his experience on a blog. You don’t want to read it? Simple- don’t read it. I thought it was valuable information, and well-written, to boot. A lot of the comments were insightful and constructive, too. Thanks, all.

  37. Nick Taylor Says:

Don’t feel bad – every closed system is an open-invitation
for an open system to come along and leave it in the dust.

Apple are just cashing in on the period between them being the first to create a new paradigm on how the web is accessed, and someone else coming along and doing it properly. Android may not be there yet… and it may not even be “The One”, but sooner or later something will turn up.

Anything that hinders the flow of information eventually gets routed around.

  38. Enzo Says:

I’ve quit developing for the iPhone. Their whole process sucks. You have to put a lot of time and effort to make a good app and just knowing that it may not be accepted is ridiculous. They shouldn’t have that power. They don’t have the power to reject apps for OS X. Fuck the app store & fuck Apple.

  39. rang3r n33b 42 Says:

stupid macfag sure got told –Kraln: Yep, I got told–

  40. alex Says:

I’ve been considering to develop a version of my app for iPhone but eventually thought the risk was too high. Went for a desktop and Android versions instead. Android is pretty much in hibernation as of now but I guess it’ll be taking off by the end of 2009 with more phones coming to the market.

  41. RH Says:

The problem is that many of the people reviewing the apps are idiots. Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity.

I have a feeling that much of the review process has been outsourced to India. It has that feel: people interpreting the rules without thinking about the intent. So they hand out these “iPhone UI guidelines” documents to these smart but inexperienced software people in a third world country. Most of these guys don’t even know about the class of applications they’re testing. They just know if the wrong icon is used or something on the checklist is off, then the app gets rejected.

Apple needs to fix this. Their problem is they don’t have the resources to put put clueful people on the task because there are so many apps being submitted.

I know it’s frustrating; we’re on our third pass with an app right now that they told us would be approved if we made on change on the 2nd time around. Now they don’t like an icon we picked.

Kraln, I don’t know how your app works, but if it needs login credentials before it does anything, maybe changing it so that it has some functionality (e.g. reading the help screen, etc) without requiring a login.

Unfortunately, Apple won’t tell people how to change their apps to get them approved. They just tell you what you did wrong; not how to fix it. Which really sucks.

  42. Kimble Says:

Oh man this is exactly like my situation. I want Apple to convince me to use the iPhone because as I (and probably lots of others see it) there’s nothing better about them than any other phone. All been done before. Although your app seems cool.

Read about my experience with trying to convince Apple to convince me to use an iPhone (full disclosure – I use a Nokia E71 and in my opinion it’s vastly superior). http://greenerdesktop.com/425/apple-can-i-be-converted-to-the-iphone

  43. ryan Says:

    about piracy

its only karma that any app you make will be pirated…
so many past projects were built from pirated apps
There is a debt to repay to the pirate community for all you received from them

To be honest, I don’t see why the piracy surprises you, you know the role of piracy in the games community just as much as anyone. You should of seen it coming from a long ways away.

There are ways you could use piracy to your advantage however. If version 1 gets massly popular, in part due to piracy, then theres gonna be a larger demanding audience for the sequel. A company getting respect as a producer of quality, entertaining games is going to ensure its future more than its bank account. Yes the bank is essential. But do not forget that studios make good games first, and the bank follows second. A game developer is an artist first, an entertainer first, and a businessman second. The great games were not made because the artists wanted to get rich, the great games were made because the artists wanted something to play that they themselves could enjoy, because they themselves wanted something new and cool.

I know school teaches you to plan out, nail down, write up, pre-plan and reflect. They want you to develop and refine a formula for development. But I feel the greatest moments in past developments came about, not from everyone following a plan of action, but rather everyone following their own intuition. What brought most recognition in the past was not a component of planned development, but a component of pure intuition, a component of doing simply what you felt would be cool as it came to you on the fly. That component is still in there somewhere.

In the chaos of the thing, many separate intuitions being followed, something good emerged from it around a stabilized center. Not by any creation of its own will, but rather it simply developed out of the merit of its own existence. Do not forget where you come from. The same old tricks must be employed, just with a new level of maturity.

  44. Brad Strickland Says:

Apple’s approval process is the tech equivalent of reading tea leaves or chicken bones tossed on the cave floor. In iPhone 3.0 there are rumors that the approval process will be somewhat relaxed. I hate it for developers who and put weeks are months into a project and then with little or no explanation from Apple have their work turned down.

  45. lowell Says:

here’s what you learned from this debacle: in the future, consider a contract stipulation protecting you from App Store review issues when negotiating with your client.

  49. bart Says:

I have no love for Apple. But their business model is an undeniable success and the closed nature of their system is for their benefit to closely control the user experience and maximize their profits. Like many have said do not like it, go else where. Stop whining and act, I would love to see Apple lose out on good apps to force them to change their policy to be more consumer and developer friendly. But as this story and many others have revealed, if you are not willing to kiss Apple’s butt their are 10 other developers who will fill the gap.

That being said I am still not following exactly why Kraln is so upset:
“A week later I get an email saying that I did not provide them with a demo account to access … fine, I only gave them a username and password, not test credit card accounts.”
“Apple… require an external account to be functional…”

A week is a fairly good turn around time in my book. “fine” seems like a fairly poor attitude. If Kraln had provided them with a fully functional test account instead of being a child about it he would have had his app in the store. No w maybe that is harsh, maybe their are reasons why a fully functional test account is an absurd demand by Apple. Fact is a dozen other developer were obviously willing to provide Apple with what they desired, Kraln was not. Only one person to blame here for wasted time and that is Kraln.
–Kraln: The point here was that they could have said “That’s not a valid business model” at the one week point, not a month later

How am I supposed to explain to MerchantPlus what you just did?
First explain that 40 others were willing to do the foot work to get their app through and then maybe what Apple did would be quite clear.
–Kraln: It’s not that I didn’t do the footwork, thanks. This was not my first application through the app store–

How can I justify putting any more work towards any iPhone app when your review process is so thoroughly broken?
You probably should not if you are not willing to take the time to work within the system and do not profit enough from doing so.
–Kraln: That’s the point of the post. Most developers don’t know what they’re getting into, or think they are going to get rich quickly–

When your apps are pirated freely?
This is Apple’s fault how? You speak out of both sides of your mouth people. Everyone complains about draconian control and then complains about piracy being Apple’s fault. Piracy is a given on any popular platform, Apple has done more than most to prevent it. There are a enough people with iPhones unwilling or unable to jailbreak and pirate apps to make a profit. Once Android becomes popular enough there is no way we will not see those apps pirated like crazy, same with any other mobile platform. Maybe your app should not be developed to be so easily pirated. Why not require some online account subscription to verify Triphids purchase each time it fires up or something if you are so worried?
–Kraln: Apart from the fact that external accounts are somehow now banned? Because the anti piracy on the phone is laughable at best, and it *is* apples fault–

But anyway, death to Apple! Lets just make good arguments toward their demise.
–Kraln: That’s not the sentiment I was going for.–

  50. Travis Says:

WHY is the text in your comments section so small. Illegible! I’m running Firefox 3 on Ubuntu Hardy, maybe you wrote the site on something with different fonts?

–Kraln: Quite possibly, I’ll bump it up–

  51. Jack Hughes Says:

Isn’t the facebook app one of the biggest apps on the iphone store? doesn’t that require an external account to operate? ditto the twitter app… Say what you like about Microsoft, at least they value developers. –Kraln: Developers developers developers developers–

  52. bart Says:

–Kraln: The point here was that they could have said “That’s not a valid business model” at the one week point, not a month later
Maybe this is where I am confused then. Why are there 40 other similar applications if it is not a valid business model?

–Kraln: It’s not that I didn’t do the footwork, thanks. This was not my first application through the app store–
I understand you have got apps successfully through to the app store in the past, but not one that had external accounts I assume? Still I go back to the other 40 apps that you say are identical. What did they do differently than you? Are you saying Apple singled you out to screw you over? Seems to me you did or failed to do something that the other 40 did not, they provided functional test accounts you did not.

–Kraln: That’s the point of the post. Most developers don’t know what they’re getting into, or think they are going to get rich quickly–
I would agree the process is a bit more daunting than I first assumed, just to get an app on my own iPhone for playing let alone to the app store which I have no bothered with yet. But with the stories floating around of app rejection there seems to be clear that Apple may not like what you are submitting and that is the risk you take. I guess I am under no delusion that it would be easy, but perhaps others still are. But a week turn around still seems pretty quick and if you would have provided a functional account you may never have made the post.

–Kraln: Apart from the fact that external accounts are somehow now banned?
External accounts are surly not banned. I have used a medical app for viewing patient lab results for the providers at a medical office. This app requires you to provide credentials for obvious reasons.

–Kraln: Because the anti piracy on the phone is laughable at best, and it *is* apples fault–
Fighting piracy is generally a stupid waste of resources. Essentially the aim should be to restrict casual copying, past that the dedicated pirates will always win in the end and nothing will be gained. More money will be poured into failed protections then are gained from increase in sales. This iPhone app developer (http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/03/developer-fights-iphone-app-piracy-by-turning-cracks-into-demos.ars) tracks users and can disable the app of pirated users to an extent. The post notes that a quality try before you buy type of system would deter some pirates who actually did turn around and buy the app. The only system I can find that has done more to deter piracy for the moment is Sony with the PS3. Otherwise every other system out their is cracked more readily then the iPhone or is not yet popular enough to have mainstream pirates. Without popularity your app would not really profit yet from exposure on those platforms anyway, the same exposure that results in pushing piracy. But I am happy to criticize Apple, their draconian control over the app store and hardware suck, but I cannot go speaking out of the other side of my mouth and saying their piracy prevention sucks as well when they are one in the same. At least point out where Apple could improve. I have not ripped apart their DRM schemes yet. I would think the farthest they could go is encryption based on a private unique key embedded in each individual device hardware/firmware. Then the app encrypted with the public key only runnable by the iPhone that bought it. But still someone would figure out how to extract their device’s private key and decrypt the app. Either that or continuous phone home and unique embedded identifiers that would set off alarms at Apple and disable pirated apps. But still pirates would learn to rip those out like they do with PC apps and who wants to be bothered with being on the network every time the want to play a game? Apple has to fight piracy as a distribution method, as competition, they need to make the iTunes store easier than the pirate scene, and they have proven that they have with something far easier to pirate then iPhone apps, music. While the thought of your hard work being distributed for free is a big pill to swallow, I am not convinced it did not result in more advertisement, exposure and sales then if it had not been pirated. But really as long as we blame others for our problems, “oh Apple does not protect my development time and products enough”, we will always be victims. But this is an old debate, lower prices, improve distribution, different business models…you know all the arguments for combating piracy yourself. Stop lying to your self that you can protect your app in a little perfect no pirate bubble, and accept that it was popular enough for some pirate to waste more then $0.99 of his time to steal. Pat yourself on the back for a fine product. If you cannot live off the profit made from the app and kid yourself that piracy is to blame go ahead and be a starving developer, but accept that it is your choice to do so, no one else’s.

–Kraln: That’s not the sentiment I was going for.–
Oh, I know. That is the sentiment I am going for. Apple does not see you or me as a person, we are potential sources for profit. Anyone thinking Job’s loves them cause he reads their emails and maybe changes something should realize he does it in the end not out of good will, but for the almighty dollar, good PR helps with that. In turn I see Apple the same way, I will use them, play their game to profit, if I am not willing to play then I cannot expect to profit. If you are really convicted to invoke change in Apple, leave them, wipe that Apple logo off your blog and stop developing and drinking the kool-aid, I dare you. I hope for a better system like many of the other posters in a open system like Android, but I am under no delusion that Google loves me any more. Google just dresses up their PR even better with “do no evil” and “we are open”. In the end they will do whatever they can to push Google ads. So I say again, death to Apple! At least in its current form of closed control (the hardware development and innovation are usually very lovely in pushing other parts of the industry)…but sadly as long as people are drinking the Job’s kool-aid that will not happen any time soon.

  53. Kraln Says:

To be very specific to your concerns, a week turnaround time is fine. Apparently I didn’t give them enough of a demo account, but whatever, I wasn’t really griping that. What I am griping is that within five minutes I had an updated information back on the account, and then four weeks later I get a notice that whatever I am doing is not halal. This is not fine. I would have appreciated this at the one week mark. I had even queried them in the interim, and got boilerplate “each app takes a different amount of time”.

As far as piracy, yes, fighting pirates is a losing proposition. Except that, as apple, they can sign binaries that can only be run on the one phone that they were bought for. This would make the casual piracy (and yes, it’s casual) much more difficult. Piracy can’t be fought, but casual piracy can.

  54. Geoff Says:

We were very worried when we developed our newest app, Snap!t Photo Mail. It requires credit card processing because we actually print and mail photos. We did not encounter any sort of options as everything is extremely secure but we were concerned that apple would find some sort of issue. It’s worth checking out. It’s a pretty cool app!

  55. bart Says:

OK, then I understood correctly. I was worried I was missing something. Note to developers, provide completely functional demo accounts! We have learned a lesson from your experience there. Would be nice if Apple had got back to you with in a week again that the demo account was insufficient, but who knows what the dealings with the other 40 apps were as well. They could have submitted a week before you and got no more special treatment, and had a 4 week hiatus then got a proper demo account in line for Apple themselves. I am not seeing where Apple is to blame (sure they have insufficient staff and turn around times maybe, but we all knew that already, part of the game). I am one for taking responsibility for my self. I need to give Apple no easy excuses to reject your app nor any difficulties that would slow down their testing and approval like a partially functional account. The attitude I saw and that may have been conveyed to Apple is that you begrudgingly gave the demo account, like: “fine”, why would they need that, here take it. Instead of kissing the app reviewers ass to get your app through. If I was a reviewer and got a half ass answer to my request after my quick week turn around to get your app through I am sure it would have went to the bottom of my pile, perhaps it got stuck behind an app that took me three weeks to review that I started up in the mean time waiting on your response.
I am guessing the review process is not a one day thing, trying to break an app and make sure nothing slips by you cannot be an easy, especially when an outside account and server not contained in your test environment are in question.

I would have assumed Apple had implemented in hardware a way to sign binaries and make them unique for each iPhone and all that jazz, but I have found nothing out there confirming this. Do you have a link to a resource where Apple claims they can do so? If they can and they have chosen not to for right now I can imagine a few explanations. Perhaps it is more trouble on their end then it is worth for the time being to sign each download individually? Not a great excuse, but maybe they are waiting to turn it on. I am disappointed that they have not done so in a way if they thought ahead. We know Microsoft already has that ability with the Xbox 360 from what I understand, of course their physical distribution model of DVDs still hinders that.

We can argue the semantics of “casual piracy” of course. I am not sure I am convinced that it is casual piracy, in my mind the definition of casual being by chance or without effort, almost by accident or without thought. Seems that by that loose definition that little piracy is casual. Perhaps music piracy is to that level, being that nearly every computer has software to facilitate such piracy, iTunes itself makes it easy to borrow a friends CD and grab the music off it. I think Windows media player auto runs and would rip an audio CD for you, you could do it by accident pretty much. If grandma can do it, it could be casual. But iPhone apps are not that easy to pirate yet.

Then we have the next level. DVDs, now you need a program to rip the DeCSS, takes a little effort or knowledge, but still fairly amateur with programs like DVD shrink. Maybe grandma is not doing it, but little sister is. Still easier then iPhone app piracy, no need to modify the player to accept a pirated DVD.

Then we have PC applications and games. Some of those fall under casual for sure as well. Throw in any old game or app and copy the key from a friend and you are playing StarCraft and creating word documents no problem. A lot easier than mp3 ripping almost. But now we have intrusive DRM and online genuine advantage checks. But still you can throw Leopard on your old Mac that is running Tiger without much bother other than getting the DVD from your friend who just got a shiny new Mac. No modification of the end hardware or software (yeah yeah, you need a Mac for that OS X piracy to be that easy).

Now things get a little more complicated. So how does the piracy process go. To me casual means you are easily able to grab it from a friend’s copy. If it requires some leg work to crack and you are torrenting it from a “pro” pirate or require some DRM freeing program like those that get around DeCSS that is a step up. Now with the rampant availability of torrents perhaps it is casual enough, but that is still a bit of a stretch. Your average iPhone user (at least in my sampling) is not even torrenting his or her own mp3z usually. But we can argue either way there, but grandma is going to much more easily accidentally stick an audio CD in her Mac and iTunes guides her through ripping it to her iPod she got for xmas from the grand kids, as opposed to torrenting that mp3 or latest movie. So step one is acquiring the warez. The easiest being no DRM breaking application, like old PC programs and audio CDs. The second level requiring a DRM breaking tool, but little special skills in obtaining the file like a DVD. The third is one that takes a little more leg work to use the DRM hacking tool, the iPhone app hacking may be as easy as the DVD I am not sure. But items like Wii games require a special DVD drive or a lot of patients with transferring via SD card using the Wii, but not beyond most hardware readily available. The next hardest option requires special hardware needed, like ripping a Nintendo DS game would be the pinnacle of piracy defense. Device specific signed binaries could be arguably more difficult to crack then general DRM or even proprietary hardware. Requiring special hardware to extract the decryption key for a device so you can pirate software signed for it. So Apple fails to reach the highest point of locking into a proprietary format or signing a binary to be device specific perhaps. But it appears to be defeating other popular mobile platforms from Windows Mobile to Symbian in this area whose apps are readily copied with no DRM. But really anyone obtaining pirated goods is not doing ripping, the are torrenting the apps. I would argue that is a step beyond casual but pretty close to casual these days.

The second step is getting the pirated unDRMed warez to work on your device. Now mp3z will play anywhere from your stereo, to your computer, to your mobile, to maybe your toaster and alarm clock these days. Now that again is casual. Pirated DVDs and movies are not much more difficult to get fired up, although Apple makes it difficult with their restrictions on format for the iPhone. Pirated PC applications are trivial as well to install. This is where the iPhone restricts fairly well. No it is not the top tier of hardware protection like the PS3 or other consoles, but it does require a jailbreak. Jailbreaking is not casual. A lot of very techie people will not chance it, whether it is because they are developers who do not want to compromise their device for real app store development, or people who value their phone’s integrity over pirated apps, since unlike a PS3 or Nintendo DS a broken phone is a bit more annoying then not getting your Pokemon fix, or people not wiling to risk losing access to Apple’s app store.

I have pirated just about everything I can imagine, from mp3z to movies, to video games, to Java midlets. I have done everything from use a swap disk on my PS2, to a Slot 1 cards for my DS, to soldering mod chips into my Xbox 360, to running OS X on a PC. Really for no other reason than the challenge and to be naughty. But I have not bothered to jailbreak my iPod Touch 2G or iPhone 3G, nor pirated an iPhone app. Therefore it must not be that casual, or worth it yet ;) .

Apple has traded the protection of a proprietary media format for electronic distribution. But in doing so, by example of their iTunes music success vs mp3 piracy, has done a lot to counter piracy. Now if they implement a individual device signed binary distribution without altering the end user experience I doubt it will protect developers any more than the current DRM. For the simple fact that if you argue that torrent distribution is what makes iPhone pirated app distribution casual this will still occur once the pirates extract their iPhone’s private key and break the new DRM. Before I would be sold on signed binaries offering more piracy protection you would have to convince me that iPhone pirates have a close friend grabbing the app (like the latest CD), then cracking it and giving it to his closest buddies, rather than the 99.9% of iPhone pirates grabbing their pirated iPhone apps off a single torrent. The ability to block non-DRM apps from the other end is the greatest deterrent, and I am sure they are fighting jailbreaking the best they can, although the optical drive protection afforded to video game consoles trumps it in protection to some extent.

The google voice fiasco was the final straw for me. I was in the process of starting a company with some fellow developers to make fitness programs. Our plan was to support the iPhone first, the move to other platforms.

That plan is going to be scrapped. We are not going to dedicate the amount of time for a chance at being able to sell our product. We will target blackberries, and android phones, maybe even the pre. The iPhone will be AFTER we have gotten established (if that happens) and only if we have free time.

Like designers are forced to design stuff within the limited code available and not go beyond it, their innovation is somewhat limited but still I think Web Design won’t die! I agree that Amazon and other some big sites won’t have a blog but now a days it’s very important to have some sort of option available so people can quickly communicate their thoughts. I think Amazon if wants to shift it to that, they can get a customized CMS for themselves.

In the end I’d rather pay more for links that matter instead of paying for mass submissions that don’t do anything.

Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
